I see others have already corrected you in the comments, and your experience is obviously different than mine, but most of the racist southerners I know stayed southern Democrats until Obama. That was the real "party switch". A lot of non-racists were Democrats too because that's just what their family always was. The Republicans not "helping black people" was due to states rights issues and limiting federal government. Johnson's great society destroyed the black community.
