OR
B) A Chainsaw
I think an axe has a primal hands on feel to it, whereas the chainsaw has the noise... Its for a short story, promise.

Both are somewhat played out and will be at least a bit derivative. But when the protagonists hear a chainsaw in the distance they’ll never expect to turn around and take an axe to the face.
Have you considered inventing your own weapon? Maybe a chainsaw-axe?lmao
